Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Lilia G Vanini, I was born and raised in Lima Perú, since I was a little girl I learned to sew, watching my grandmothers who worked for a recognized boutique in Lima, I moved to USA and later on to Italy, where I really finished to understand my true passion and where I learned the best italian methods and finishing techniques that I still improve every day on my work: I made handbags, jewelry, accessories and very soon, make up, I love to learn, create, design and most important, I love to make the item, I enjoy every step in the manufacturing of the product.
Apart from creating things what do you do?
My full time is to grow Lilia Vanini as a recognized brand, but practically living in three places, Lima, Venice and Miami, I certainly do other interesting things. When I am in USA I love to look for new materials, fabrics, books and vintage, when I am in Venice I like to drink a glass of wine with my friends and enjoy a good italian meal and clean my apartment, when I am in Lima, I love to watch on tv cooking shows, it really relaxes me, I also like to look around the world new additions to my cupcake collection, and all related to cupcakes, just love them!! The rest of the time? sewing, knitting, crocheting, designing, taking photos, making beads, writing, buying shoes, dreaming, waiting, loving, laughing and absolutly enjoying live with my husband.
Where is your inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes from what I want to transmit as Lilia Vanini brand and definitely of my experiences in the three places where I live and what I see every day. Also I am totally inspired when I see a lovely and colorful fabric, or an interesting wool yarn, or a new color of vetro, or a new material with which I can create a new product.
What Handmade means to you?
Handmade is a personal expression, is the satisfaction of a need, is a communication with people, is a total concentration of energy to bring the world a product made with love and passion
Who has been most influential in your craft?
I think everyone is born with certain influences, because I remember when I was very young, I found a small red old metal coin purse, and later, when I was 12, my grandmother gave me a turquoise purse, these two objects so far I remember with great affection and may have been perhaps the most influential objects in my life
When did you know you were an artist/maker?
I do not consider myself an artist, since childhood I liked to create and do things but never thought I would today, it was during my years living in Italy when I realized that this was what I wanted to do and what really made me happy.
How do you describe your creative process?
I can start with the material that I going to use and create a concept based on that, usually, I prototype on paper first and then on the testing fabric, readjust the paper prototype and eventually led to the final production
If you could peek inside the studio of any artist designer or craftsman (dead or alive) who would it be?
Definily, will be in the early studio of Marha Stewart
What Handmade possession do you most cherish?
The unfisnished knitted work that my mother left.
How do you get out of your creative ruts?
Is very difficult because as I explained before, even when I´m traveling I´m working and associating everything with new ideas, new materials, colors, textures, shapes, etc, I can say that is really hard to get out of my routine for the reason that I completely fell in love of my work.
Where would you like to be in ten years?
I´d like to have a successfully and strong bussiness and made of Lilia Vanini a brand that is recognized for quality and beauty in each product that is launched. I´d like to continue having the good traveling time with my husband, enjoy life, enjoy places and the company of good friends and family, a glass of wine, a cup of coffee and the great dishes that my husband always prepare.
